To Blog Or Not To Blog

Well, today I’m going to write about something that might be a bit controversial, but it will be the hard cold truth that some people might not want to hear and others won’t say.

I read 2 post today, different blogs, in the space of 1 hour that said “blogging is easy and you can make thousands of dollars from it quickly!”

Sorry, but that is an untruth and needs to cleared up!

To Blog or Not to Blog – Is That The Question?

Most people come online to make money usually with a MLM, direct sales or some business and are told to blog, sell their products and make money. OMG, if it were only that easy! That was me and I had no clue! 🙄

I was so confused.  I was in an MLM and thought if I built a website and started writing that clients would come and money would fall into my lap. That’s what everyone was saying, right?  Sooo wrong!

That’s why so many people walk away from their start-up business on the Internet disappointed and think that everything they were told was a scam. Because we are set up immediately for failure because we don’t have all the details for success.  Let me tell you why.

As soon as I came online I immediately learned that it was not that easy.

I didn’t know anything about blogging. I was pushed into the realm of Internet marketing: brand yourself, provide good quality content, auto responders, backlinks, SEO, build a list, etc. so customers could get to know me, like me, trust me and eventually buy from me!

What?? Eventually?!! Really? 😯 Does that sound like ‘make money fast’ to you?  But I came online to make money now!  I’ve got college tuition to pay!  Gotta pay the mortgage, bills, etc!!  🙁

I  believed blogging was easy! I figured if anyone could do it, I could since my career involves technical writing. So I could write, right? 🙂 Wrong! Not the way I needed to in order to be a skilled Internet Marketer.

Immediately I learned it takes an inordinate amount of time to:

  • Learn how to blog and blog effectively.
  • Learn attraction marketing so that you can attract customers who will buy from you.
  • Learn how to create a website or get one created that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
  • Learn SEO to get to the first/second page of Google
  • Learn WordPress – what’s the difference between a Genesis and a Thesis anyway?
  • Learn how to monetize your blog (make money – I didn’t even know what that word meant – but everyone kept saying it.)

To Blog or Not To Blog?  If you are going to blog online and make money, be prepared to make a time commitment. The learning curve is high.

I’m distressed that people promote blogging as the easy and fast way to make money online!  It is not!

It is a legitimate business, but not easy nor fast!  That is what you need to know!  People are making money online but there is no instant money-making formula!

Now, for me and some years later and with a wealth of knowledge that goes with a B.S.B.I.M (Bachelors of Science in Blog & Internet Marketing), I feel like I’ve accomplished something!

If you came online to blog and you’ve bought every product offered, blogged ’til you’re blue in the face and still haven’t made a penny…You are NOT alone!

I spent thousands (you’d drop over near death if I told you how much) to purchase products and tools to help me make money on the Internet by blogging! And one day I asked the question ‘To Blog or Not To Blog?’  That’s when I got smart.

How’d I get smart?

Changed my mindset.

No explanation needed.  Went from a non-entrepreneur to thinking like an entrepreneur.

Didn’t Give Up.

I didn’t give up and that’s the first thing that happens when you are not seeing success. You think “It’s not working” and you think it’s a scam or some such. That’s why I wrote Journey To My 7 Successes.  See how I started changing my mindset and changing my fortune.

If you are honestly working toward the goal of blogging and learning how to market online, don’t give up. Your results will get there.  I know because I was there in that same place, a lot!

Get A Coach or Mentor

Get a coach or mentor, even if you have to pay for it.  It will be the best investment you ever make as you learn everything you need from someone who has your best interest at heart.

There are some very talented ‘non-millionaires’ quietly making money and living well – all around you – that can help you.  Ask me and I’ll tell you who some of them are.  Each is an expert in particular areas and you will learn what you need – no bull!

These people are no nonsense kinda people with Doctorates in Internet Marketing through the Internet Marketing School of Hard Knocks!  and they willingly share their knowledge to those who are serious about learning.

When I started working with my Mastermind group all the pieces that I had learned started falling into place like dominoes!

Soon…I started with oh yeah – that’s how that works; oooh nice….that’s what that means; oooh man – that’s what that is…until finally, the pieces actually fit. Now people are coming to me for that same information and voila…I monetized my blog.  It works…but it wasn’t instantly!

Think Outside The Box

Even when it finally happened, it was not quite the way I thought I would be making money online.

If what you’re doing is not working for you, don’t give up – think outside the box. Do something else that may be different from what you originally planned. That’s what happened to me even though I resisted it.  But you will still get your end results!

Thinking outside the box requires a mindset shift as well. Figure out what needs to be changed and change it; change you, change whatever you need to get to your goal. Acknowledge it’s time to make it happen and just do it!

Everything Takes Time

ANYTHING you do is going to take time and some investment in order to do it right and make a living. There are NO free rides to success or financial freedom unless you’re born into or marry into a rich family.

You have to invest time and money (even if it’s as simple as buying a domain name) for your business.

Get the picture? Now why did I write this? Because it’s about honesty. I really don’t like that I was not told all this up front by ‘someone’, ‘anyone’!

Then I could have set myself up for success by understanding what was necessary and not set myself up for failure, feeling disappointed that it wasn’t working.

I was not given realistic expectations and that is a setup for failure instead of success.  Less than 10% of the population make money fast, but for the rest of us there is no such thing.

Here’s the end…sorry it’s so long.  But all this to say – you can definitely make a living on the Internet, blogging.  Just be prepared and follow the steps above to keep your mind on the right track and set yourself up for success!  My goal is to help others who need help like I did.

So what things were you told prior to getting started in Internet Marketing? Were they realistic? Are you making money online now?  Be truthful to yourself.  Honest answer.

If not, what can you do to change it?  I have references to help you if you need help.  I sincerely hope this helps you towards your success and changes your luck, fortune and life.

Good fortune to you!

    Hello Barbara
Wow, this needs to turn into an ebook for profit.
What an amazing and down to earth article.
As I read your article, t thought to myself “it seems like this was me a couple of weeks ago”, but I know better now. You are right… there is so much informtion out there and you can be lost in who to believe, but I trust my “discerment/intuition”.
If the goal in a blogger’s life is to generate fiances, then tenacity has to be within their heart and mind. If they are not tenacious, then the giving up spirit will take over.
For me, right now I am in the learning curve zone, and believe me I am learning. I will always be so thanful to Adrienne, Sylviane and you.
Now don’t forget…create an e book for profit…. you will sell it.
This is a no nonsense article and need to specks to see what a blogger’s life is, and their long term goals.
No it is not easy, but like the saying goes….If something is difficult to accomplish, then it is worth the wait.

    Thank you

    Amen to that Barbara!!!

After I lost my job in corporate America I was so fed up with it all that I decided to find my way online. I’d heard all the stories about how easy it was and I needed to make money today. Hey, they said you could and I was silly enough to believe them.

It wasn’t until I learned to look at the bigger picture that I realized I needed to change my mindset as well. Once I started making that change things got much better for me.

Do this because you love it, don’t do it because you’re expecting to become rich overnight. You’ll be so sadly disappointed.

Thanks for telling the truth, we need more of that online.

Thanks Adrienne. I know you know. We’ve both been there as have many others. I love what you said above ‘do this because you love it, don’t do it because you’re expecting to become rich overnight.’ Problem is that is the expectation, sadly! But all we can do is educate, tell the truth and help as many as we can understand.

      Thanks for your insight.

    Thank you Barbara!

A message that needs to be shared for all those who think that all they have to do is set up a blog and make money form it. NOT! Each time I see an ad saying “make money blogging” my feathers get ruffled.
There is no get rich quick platforms anywhere!

Yes, Barbara, blogging isn’t easy and fast to make money. One has to learn many things in order to market effectively. Never give up is my motto! People do get the wrong impression that all you have to do is blog. There are so many parts to the wheel. Our blog is our home base where we can attract people, engage with them, but most of all give good content…like you just did here!

But, marketing is a different story. Yet another part of the wheel that takes a big learning curve. Now you don’t have to be an MBA, because that doesn’t fly in this market place. There are some fantastic people out there besides the top guru’s that can teach marketing well.

It does take time and money to build a business. Hey, there is no free lunch! Yes, indeed you must think outside the box if there is something you are doing that isn’t working.

We look at that 10% of the people who show their fancy cars and lifestyles of grandeur. But, to make a decent living and be comfortable, yes that can be done. I think there is a high percentage of people already doing this. These are the people who don’t flash around their income (hell, I wouldn’t do that…who wants to attract attention from the IRS LOL) The folks that have replaced their jobs and now work from home. You may not notice them, but they are there!

Thanks for spreading the honesty! People need to hear it and I will spread this valuable message around.

Thank you Donna for your support and visiting the blog. I was so disturbed yesterday. It is so unfair that people promote making money online fast by blogging. It is just not true and as I stated in the article, it sets people up for failure. A horrible thing most of us learn from experience.

I think that is one of the biggest mistakes we make which is it takes time to build a business and to then treat that business like a business. If we can teach people that, we will have more successes than failures and people will be able to truly make money online.

    Hi Barbara

Amen! So true and such a necessary message. Wow I came online 3 years ago. At that time I has a network marketing business that was just getting momentum. I thought the internet would speed it up. LOL

Given 3 years ago I was a technophobe who did not even know what a browser was my learning curve was very steep. Not only did I have to learn how to blog I had to learn how to do basics on computers. I had enjoyed many years of personal assistants in corporate and I even had my upline in my MLM doing things for me 🙂

So what happened was I forgot what my main reason for coming online was and my Network Marketing Business went backwards quickly.

Do I regret it? Not coming online but I would do it very differently knowing what I know now.

Thanks for a great post Barbara.

    Hey Barbara ,
One of the reasons people drop is because they had wrong information at the beginning. They were told this thing is easy but as soon as they start facing the realities of it, they get discouraged and abandon.

My story is different though 😉
I started off by creating my own traffic product which gave me some money. It brought me closer to wonderful bloggers who then inspired me into blogging. Though I had no idea where I was going, I knew it was not a day’s ride.

I hope you are getting set for a nice weekend 😉

Hi Enstine. That’s exactly what my blog is about. People do not get the information they need from the start. They just want to make money and people tell ’em just go blog! Not cool. Even the fact that you started with your own product means you were way ahead of the game. People are at least months into learning before they hear about that or even know where to begin. Glad you got out on the right start.
And thanks for stopping by as well.
      Have a great week.

    Hi Barbara,

No making money blogging or online in general is NOT something that’s going to come fast to say the least.

I’ve been making money online since 2006, yet, I have been through 3 MLM, 7 blogs and an overall of 120+ pages online that were meant to sell my stuff. Yes, I made money. I even lived for a whole year out of that, but then, life happened and I had to start working a stupid job again 🙂 because the sites were not making enough monety anymore.

I dropped 4 of my 7 blogs and kept the 3 that you know. I’ve decided to do more blogging relationship making which I started about a year an a half ago, and basically I got back to square one in a way.

The only sites that I still make money from are basically Squidoo sites since I shut down every sales pages and squeeze pages I had.

I also had 3 eBook for sale. One is still out there, one is no more and one I now give for free on my writing blog.

In order to sell my products (promote my sales pages) I’ve written hundreds of articles on directories.

So, if all this seem to be fast and easy to some, I wanted to be sure I added it here 🙂

    Thanks for this great post!

Yeah.. It’s not that the blogging itself is so time consuming.. it’s all the other facets you mentioned.

But if you go into it with the mindset that this is a business, just as important and potentially lucrative as the McDonald’s on the corner.. then you have a real shot at making money online.

Plus you get better as you go along. My first site (I mean my 1st site that made money) took about a year to really start profiting. My next one took 6 months.. and my newest, less than 3 months.

So it definitely gets easier if you continue to learn and stick with it.

You just mentioned the biggest issue with working online. We have to treat it like a business. Absolutely. But people don’t always do that. That’s an all together different blog post LOL!
As our knowledge base gets better and better, we learn that as well. Thanks for your additional input and it is excellent advice to add.

  8. says

    Hi Barbara,

You’ve expressed in this post what most beginning bloggers feel. I don’t like the fact that people are lied to every day about blogging and internet marketing. It takes so much more than just setting up a blog and posting. I also have seen so many claims about actually setting up a blog in 5 minutes….really? It took me a lot longer to set up mine. I also had to go through the long learning curve to understand how all the parts worked together.

It is sad when you think about it. So many people are hurting financially. They are looking for a good, honest way to generate money by working at home instead of being enslave with a job. They are jumping on the internet in record numbers to find a solution to whatever financial woes they are facing. They get online, and are bombarded with false information about what it really takes to monetize a blog. You described it perfectly, ” I was in an MLM and thought if I built a website and started writing that clients would come and money would fall into my lap. That’s what everyone was saying, right? Sooo wrong!” This statement, hopefully, will alert the beginners that they may need to do their own research to find out what it REALLY takes to succeed.

It takes money, time, and relationship building. All three will eventually come together if you stick with it and keep going. There is so much to learn, but with practice it gets easier. Excellent post Barbara. I really enjoyed it!

So many people are in financial distress as you state. I wish I could help everyone. Some people think that what each person goes through is a ‘rite of passage’ and that you learn, but it doesn’t help those who need to make money quickly. We can only help as we can and educate people so that they try not to get ripped off.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts as well.

    What an awesome post Barbara!

You’re so right. Blogging is blimmin’ hard work – and anyone who says otherwise is lying. Because owning a blog isn’t just about writing posts, it’s also about optimising your website, SEO, email marketing, social media, etc etc etc.

When I first started down this track a few months ago, the self-proclaimed ‘gurus’ made it all sound so easy. And as a newbie, you’re none the wiser. You buy their products (which have been inflated 500% or more – and that offer nothing more than badly-prepared rehashed info) with the false hope that you’re going to have a booming online business in just one month! Crazy! As if…!

You know, it really riles me that these crooks prey on the uninitiated using outright manipulation – and they make thousands and thousands of dollars selling their crappy products. Ugh!

Anyways, that’s my rant. Sorry I got started on it… Thanks for bringing up this controversial topic Barbara… 🙂

    Cheers
    Lil

    • says

      Hi Lillian,

I know *exactly* how you feel and you put it sooooo well. I couldn’t have said it any better. I had to learn the hard way and no longer buy any products from any ‘guru.’ What I found helped me was to find the people who are just like me and you, but who have optimized their blogs and are writing successfully. They are the ones you connect with and learn from. Getting into the syndication groups and meeting people who will provide information as we all build our blogs together. I love the real community share and it’s so easy to pick out the wanna be money makers!

And you can rant here anytime! 🙂 We’ve all been there, done that! 🙂

      Have a great week-end

Hey Barbara, I wrote a post with the exact title back in 2009 although I had put a different spin on it. I googled it to see how it was going and gave up after several pages. I’m not too surprised at that as I wasn’t into SEO back then and Google seems to like more recent articles.

As to your post I have to agree. I’ve been telling people for ages how hard it is to make it as a blogger and that they should believe some of the claptrap they read telling them how easy it is to make money online. I’ve always believed that one of the reasons some of the Probloggers are where they are today is because they came into blogging when it was relatively new and were able to carve a name/niche out for themselves.

Todays blogger has a lot more competition, not to mention a Google who continuing changing algorithms to improve search results. Perhaps a lot more than in the early days .

    • says

True Sire. There is way more competition now that earlier on and it’s only going to get worse. My concern is for the people who are trying to come online and not get misdirected by others making money off the newbies. Everyone needs to be aware of what they need to do to blog and learn what is necessary for their success.
      Thanks for your input.
      Really appreciate it.
