Living The Millionaire Mindset

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a long time so I’ll give you fair warning that this is a bit long…but I promise it’ll be worth the read.

It’s about this thing called a Millionaire Mindset.  I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately.

It’s been written about all over the Internet. But what does it take to get and live a millionaire lifestyle without trying someone’s else’s strategy that people have a hard time implementing.

Else, the 2% successful entrepreneurs vs 98% who fail, would be the other way around; 98% successful, 2% failure rate! Right?

The normal, average every day person does not have a millionaire mindset. Living like a millionaire is simple. It’s no big secret either. Let me tell you how.

I live like I already have all the things I want. I live and think like a millionaire even though I’m no-where near rich!

Millionaire Mindset or Millionaire?

What does it mean to be a millionaire? Well, obviously it means you have money. But even if you don’t have a lot of money, you can live happily if you have a Millionaire mindset.

Let’s talk about some of the things people think they want if they were a millionaire.

Live in a Big Expensive House:

I have a small house. East Coast housing is expensive! Not crazy expensive like California, but expensive! I’m not paying $3500 a month or more! To me, that’s absolutely crazy, but many people do!

I have a small, split level 3 bedroom house, nice, on a dead end street, lovely neighbors (we’ve all been here for more than 10 years), a great little community where we help each other shovel our driveways and watch out for each other.

Travel or Go on Vacations:

I usually travel or vacation at least 3-4 times a year. It’s about planning but more importantly people think that a vacation must be a week or more away from home, spending money.

Sometimes it’s just a dance event away from home, 3 hour drive, stay at a friends’.

First of all, I travel ‘somewhere’ at least 3 times a year. Many times to the Caribbean, but just as easy jumping in the car and driving to a vacation spot or hotel or ‘somewhere’ where you’re just getting away from the every day drudgery of home and work.

It doesn’t have to be expensive. It can also just be one night out. Plan it, save for it and then just do it! Am I making it sound too simple – maybe, but having a millionaire mindset is not about being a millionaire specifically. Are you getting that? Cool! 🙂

Buying A Luxury Car:

I bought my first ‘used’ Lexus SUV 10 years ago never thinking I’d ever own one and I’ve been in love since. It’s my car of choice. My regular mindset said, nooo you can’t afford it.

My millionaire mindset said ‘Go for it. It’s yours. I bought and never looked back. WooHoo!

Four months ago, I just bought my new 2013 Lexus ES 350! Lovvvvving it!  Just do it!

Living Paycheck To Paycheck

Now some people literally live paycheck to paycheck.

I’m not suggesting you go out and spend your money and then can’t pay your mortgage or buy groceries. Maybe budgeting is the answer.

Or save $20/week for 6 weeks you and your hubby, or whoever or just by your little old lonesome can go to a nice hotel for a night and getaway or go to a spa or get your nails done or your hair ‘did’ 🙂

Millionaire Mindset Bragging Rights

Now many of you are saying ‘she’s bragging.’ Nope, that’s not it.

It’s about encouragement and letting you know that *anyone* can be there, including you.

Living like a millionaire is having the mindset that you are already there! It’s all in your head.

Yep, that’s right …it’s in your head and can be tied in with the Law of Attraction.

Living the millionaire mindset means you may not be a millionaire yet, but you’re working on it. It’s really about how you think… “like you’ve got it all!”

To me, it means you so firmly believe it, it’s engrained in your brain, heart, body and soul that there is nothing less for you to do but live life and live it well!

So What Do I Do?

I live daily with love and joy in my heart because I believe that whatever you put out there is what you will receive back. There are disappointments yes, but they don’t last long because I believe always in the best, the positive, not dwelling on the past or lack of ‘anything!’

This can be tough because ‘life sometimes gets in the way.’ You have to discard the negative when it comes and always lean back toward the positive.

It’s about accepting what you have and living your life in a planned and balanced manner; like having a budget which is not as hard as some people think.

I don’t have an 18 room house or mansion and 12 expensive cars in my driveway or live up on Society Hill somewhere.

But I always remind myself that no matter what…whatever I need, whatever I lack, whatever is not in the current happy situation I want to be in, is still right there.

Maybe I don’t see it in that particular second, or moment, or hour, but I believe it’s still there – just around the corner. Always! It’s just like trying to look around a corner. Sometimes we only see it when we *turn* the corner itself.

I’ve been believing it all my life even when I was young. I knew I was always meant for something better, bigger, grander and many of those things have come.

The Bible says ‘Believe it and Receive It.’ The Law of Attraction says ‘Whatever you believe, it is in the power of your mind to produce the results of being a millionaire.’

I’m not talking about the hard work that comes with your business or whatever you choose to do to get to millionaire status. That’s a part of the process. You can work hard for years and never be a millionaire or wealthy because you really don’t believe you will.

You have to believe it to receive it!

So many people believe you’ve got to go to school, get an education, work a good job, retire and life is just ho-hum; as good as it gets. That means’ deep down inside people only believe richness and fullness in life to be a dream. A fantasy.

Those that make it, believe it for real down in their core. I remember, Adrienne Smith told me of a relative or friend or someone she knew who always said ‘I’m going to be a millionaire’ and you know what – somewhere in her 70’s she did! Out of the blue. She believed it. It happened! That’s it!

I’ve been saying I’m going to be a millionaire all my life. Coming from the deep south, living in poverty, being a single mother at 23 making $12,000 a year at the time…trying to make it work living day to day, paycheck to paycheck.

That was a long time ago, 33 years to be exact. My daughter, born then, is now a successful surgical technician. I’ve been married, educated with 3 degrees, 2 more children (all in the medical field), make over 6 figures yearly and have my own businesses (yep – multiple streams of income). I knew I’d always be a millionaire. 🙂

I AM A Millionaire!

I rarely ever lack for *anything.* Thank God!

Basically, what I do is measure the worth of the things I want; I travel where I want to travel; maintain my home businesses (Having an extra business and multiple streams of income definitely helps), do the things I want to do, get the things I want to get and save some money in the bank. I consider myself rich!

I just wait for the rest. 🙂 It always comes! Never fails me because I believe and live a millionaire mindset!

So if I can start where I started with nothing, then so can you!

Do I have a millionaire dollars yet? Nope, not yet. Do I believe I will be? Yep! No doubt in my mind. Ever!

Do you believe you have a millionaire mindset? Be honest and true now! 🙂 How do you feel about this millionaire mindset thing? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Stay blessed and believe!

    Hey Barbara,

What an AMAZING article! I think so many people forget to realize that they are only as rich as they decide they are!

I’m a college student, but I save and spend wisely – I live a millionaire mindset in a studio apartment and when I want to make a purchase I do – because I’m smart, savvy, and save. Like Nike says, JUST DO IT!

      Hi Zach,

For a college student, you’re very wise! 🙂 Most college students don’t save or spend wisely and that’s why you have a millionaire mindset. You will be able to go far and do exactly what you want if you keep being savvy and smart! Love it.

Thanks my friend. Stay where you are. You’re going to make it far.

    Hi Barbara,

Oh yes I do girl. I learned that one a while ago when I read the book “Rich Woman” by Kim Kiyosaki. I first read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and that got my wheels spinning. Then when I read his wife’s book Rich Woman, I found myself out on my back deck one day being thankful to God for all I have and screamed out with my hands in the air “I Am A Rich Woman”

OK…one of my neighbors came out to see if I was OK but I guess I blurted it out pretty loud he he.

Since then, I am so grateful for all that I myself have accomplished and never take it for granted for a moment. Oh yea..I do want more because there are many more things I want to do with my life. But living in that mindset only brings more to me and my faith in God of course!

Its funny because right before I came to your blog, I was just asked to have a meeting with someone that wants me to do all her blogging and social media marketing for her. Now you can imagine what that’s gonna cost! Amen!

All I can say Donna is Amen, Amen, Amen. Everything you say is correct and I can’t add to it! LOL! We are rich women and we sometimes forget what we have. Too many people worry about what they don’t have. I mean, I think about it…and think about I’d like to have… but then I put it out there and it’s all a done deal. All I have to do is wait. Like for that yatcht and living in a nice, sunny area…maybe an Island…hummm….a little closer don’t you think LOL! (I know most people won’t know what I just said, but you’ll know. 😉

And what will it cost for blogging and social media…? 🙂

      Have a good week,

Hi Barbara, I think of it more in other terms than money, like do you have enough for the essentials and things you want to do? Do you know you can make money another way if you lose your job or income stream? To me that is a millionaire’s mindset. I also believe those quotes about if you believe it can come true, you must REALLY believe though….

      Hi Lisa,

Thanks for responding. Yes I mentioned that of course you must have your essentials. I don’t suggest in any way to spend your mortgage money or ‘essential living money.’ I suggest we save, adjust, balance and live like there is no tomorrow, no regrets. That’s one thing.

The 2nd thing is “you don’t worry about if you can make money another way if you lose your job or stream of income.” If you worry about it, you’re not thinking with the right mindset. You’re thinking in the ‘every day life’ mode of life – go to school, get a job, follow the regular everyday life things that everyone else thinks about and worries about. It’s a bit negative thinking. How about turn it around.

You say “Do you know you can make money another way if you lose your job or income stream?”

I say ” ‘if you lose your job or income stream, you know you can make money.’

See the difference. My point is I really don’t worry about it. I’m a contractor in IT. When my assignment ended on October 4, 2013 for a day I thought I need another assignment. Yeah there are other streams of income, but not to replace my salary. But I literally didn’t worry about it. I took the steps required to ‘become’ available and have people find me for IT assignments – LinkedIn, the and other sites and within 7 days I had a job. I believed I would. I didn’t run out an book a vacation or spend $1000 on clothes because I had to pay attention to my finances; that would be foolish. But there was no doubt, I would have a job, more money and soon – 7 days!

Now let me tell you why – because I didn’t worry. I believed it would happen and soon.

To me, a millionaire mindset is there was no doubt I was going to make money. No doubt that I would have money. It’s faith and belief and trust and doing what you gotta do.

Do you know that if I had to I would work in a Wendy’s or whatever to make the money I need. And in a short period of time guess what – I would own the Wendy’s. Millionaire Mindset!

    Hi Barbara,

That was indeed a lovely post 🙂

Yes, so often we see our state and wish that we were millionaires. I think we fail to realize all that we have got and tend to think more of what we don’t have, which is the negative way of thinking, but I know most of us do that.

To think positive and believe that you are a millionaire, eventually makes you one, once the Law of Attraction works in your favor when you start believing in it, just as Adrienne’s relative became eventually. I think we fail to see the small victories and achievements we make along the way and tend to measure everything in money alone, which is important only to a certain extent. It’s ALL in the mind – what you think, you become, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

Thank you so much for stopping by and thank you for the compliment.

I agree with you that we think in such a negative manner. Most of us do that and are not even aware.

The Law of Attraction is so powerful that you can’t help but be what you wish and receive what you want when you really believe it. Adrienne mentioned it again in her comment. It happened because of her belief. No doubt. And what was powerful was that she actually started building her pool when she wanted a pool and it happened! I love that.

OMG did you hit the nail on the head when you said we don’t see the small victories and achievements. Richness and millionaire mindset does not just come from the money. It is truly about how we live with those victories and achievements. I truly feel I am rich, even when I’m not ‘money-wise’ where I want to be like when I had built up a substantial amount of savings and then had to put on a new roof! You know what I said…instead of lamenting that I’m not rich and being negative about all the money I would have to pay…I said ‘thank God I had the money to put that roof back over my head.’ Small victories, positive thinking, great achievements!

Thanks again for stopping by. Have a blessed week yourself.

Great read, Barbara!! Honestly, I have never even thought about the idea of a millionaire mindset. It’s funny because I just had a conversation with my accountability partner and she asked me what my monthly dollar goal was for my business. I said something to the effect of, “Oh, some money would be great”. She said, that wasn’t going to fly because I needed an exact figure. I realized then it’s all about being specific about what you want — whether it’s money, time, happiness, etc.

And, a lot of what you want and how you want to live (as you point out) can be done in the here and now. We put a lot of restrictions on ourselves because we don’t have this and that. But, I believe these are invisible restrictions that are not real. I probably should want to be a millionaire though, especially for retirement!! Ha. You’ve definitely given me something to think about!

      Heeeey Jennifer,

How you doing lady?! Well I hope. Glad you liked the article. And thinking like a millionaire should always be at the forefront of your mind.
Your accountability partner is right. We do have to be specific in our belief in what we want, otherwise, God, the Universe or whoever we believe in doesn’t know what to give you. I literally envision my bank account with 1 million dollars in it. I have my iPhone set that four times a day it goes off and sends me a text message (from my calendar) that says ‘I am a millionaire in Ardyss International.’ I remind myself of that affirmation everyday (4 times a day). I also remind myself daily to say thank you. 4 times it is set up in my iPhone calendar to go off and remind myself. So not only am I affirming what I want and will become, but I also say Thank You for all I have and what I am going to receive.

I also like what you say about putting restrictions on ourselves. Not! We must not do that and we mentally do it more than we physically do it.

But changing our mindset is hard. We have to start looking at how we think. Your last sentence said “I probably should want to be a millionaire…” Whaaat? 🙂 You *are* a millionaire, You’re going to be a millionaire, I want to be a millionaire and I’m there already” is how we should think. Think about it and I’ll see you on the millionaire cruise. I’m thinking that I’m going to do a millionaire cruise for all of us to join and have a blast! 🙂

      Let’s do it! God Bless,

      Be specific.

    Hello Barbara,

It’s great that you have this very great entry about the millionaire mindset. Recently, I have been writing (and arguing), that mindset is far more important than any skills you may posses. How you see yourself is thus crucial to the way others see you and that ultimately facilitates whether or not you would get that which you desire.

You are on the right track…depress the gas pedal deeper!

You’re so right Akaahan. Many of the true millionaires really didn’t start out with any great skills or even an education. Many of the big guys, particularly online fortuneers, :0 will tell you they were on their last leg, trying to pay their last bill. Without the millionaire mindset, these guys would not have made it to millionaire status.

As you say, put the pedal to the metal and drive!

    Hey Barbara,

It took me awhile to get to that place but I am definitely there now and have been for awhile now. I do 100% believe that I am financially free and does that mean I’m a millionaire? Maybe, maybe not but whatever it takes is where my mind is.

I use to not be able to picture that because like you said, I was raised to think otherwise and it took a long time to reprogram my brain. Just like I’ve always told myself that if other people don’t like me that’s not my concern because I’m a good person and I’m not losing any sleep over it.

So I know with everything that I am that I am financially free so it can show up any time it wants. LOL!!!

The lady I was talking about I read about last year and she had always told her family she was going to be a millionaire some day. They just laughed at her for years until they finally just kind of shrugged her off when she would say that. She had always wanted a pool in her backyard so she told her family she was going to get one. They told her she couldn’t afford it but she always said, “well I’m a millionaire so I can get anything I want”. One day she decided she was tired of waiting so she called the people and told them she was ready to have her pool installed. Her family thought she’d lost her mind and just as they were ready to lay the cement for the pool, Publishers Clearing House showed up on her door and she won a million dollars. She was in her early 70’s. Hey, she always believed and she had no idea how it would happen but she just knew that it would. Never say never unless you really just don’t believe. 😉

Hey, never stop believing because our time is here.

      Hi Adrienne,

You’re so right. It’s about belief and faith. I remember you telling us that story and remember thinking to myself, I’ve always thought like that.

It does take a while to re-program the brain. People don’t always get it. They think it’s all about money, but it really is critical to believing it. But I’m with you – I’m financially free. Even today, when the sewer got clogged, and the heater broke again and the toilet overflowed and while I’m trying to save some of my money for my trip to Carnival, I had to dish out waaaaay more money than I wanted to. I got upset twice for about 5 minutes and then said ‘oh well, easy come, easy go! Why? Because, it’ll come back in ’cause I’m a millionaire.

I actually think it’s kind of funny but I remember being a kid and although not able to voice what I was ‘feeling’, not thinking, I knew I was going to be a millionaire. So I’ll see you on the cruise Adrienne (cause that’s where we’re going) when we hit the Lotto! 😉 Next week! 😉

Our time is the right now and the right time is right now.

    Hey Barbara,

This is a great post! A lot of people, at least most of the people I know, don’t have a millionaire mindset and I can see why they stay in the situation they’re in. Some shake my head when I tell them I’m going to make it, but in the meantime I take advantage of what life offers. It helps keep you in that vortex of the millionaire mindset.

There are times when life just really hit you and I have to admit that it gets me of course. I start focusing on the negative and why I’m not at the level I want to be, but I then turn my focus on how far I have come. Once I do that, I start to focus on the options that I do currently have. I know I can take trips to Las Vegas, go salsa dancing, go to some of the local festivals, travel back east, and much much more. Sometimes we have to start to think about these things and show our appreciation of what we have and what we done so far so it can propel us to keep moving forward!
