Are You Sick of Social Media?

Social media used to be fun!  Maybe it still is for many people, but since social media is now being used as much for business as social interaction, it has for me, personally, become a chore.

What do I mean?  Well, in the last couple of years,  social media has become the norm to reach out to people to promote their business.

But there are multiple problems with doing business online and using social media and much of it stems from people just not understanding what they need to do.  Other problems are:

1.  People don’t know who you are.   People are coming online but don’t understand the concept of building relationships and don’t know how to effectively interact with people to begin and continue a productive, informative and interchangeable relationship.

2.  It’s time consuming.  To me, it seems like a 24/7 job.  Promoting yourself  ‘everywhere’ and ‘the right way’ as to not spam is stressful, hard work  and tiring.  Don’t you think?

3. Many new entrepreneurs have no idea what they’re doing.  When I started out, I didn’t have a clue.  It took me years to understand all the nuances of how to do business online and what building relationships was all about.

4. Many people don’t have the sales knowledge or business savvy to understand how to run a business at all, either online marketing and social media.

5.  People don’t have marketing skills; business savvy; people skills, money management skills, etc.  The bigger problem is they don’t know that they even need these skills.

You See, What Had Happened Was …!

I’m a network marketer.  Just recently, I decided to find like-minded groups of network marketers and provide valuable information about bringing their businesses online, discuss how to market, how to blog, etc. to fellow network marketers.

I went to Facebook and did a search for groups called Network Marketing.

My goal was to see if there was a positive community of network marketers who wanted to bring their recruiting online.  I wanted to see how we could help each other.

I was looking for people who were building relationships and working together sharing valuable information among each other. The problem was everyone was online but  ALL were doing it the WRONG WAY!

People are in FB groups, and othersocial media, think dropping links in every group is the way to do business.

I searched numerous groups and every group had posts like this:

  • Want to make a million dollars on this system?  Here’s a brand new …
  • Turn $1.75 into $100,000 and Never Pay More than that $1.75 out of your pocket!
  • TURN $12 INTO $4000/WEEK ONLINE.  * No selling products – in any way, shape or form.  * No advertising.  * No data entry.

Well, you get the picture.  These are just a few with, of course, always the associated link!

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

THIS IS ALLLLL WRONG!

This is not the way to recruit or sell or attract people to you. And NO one is paying attention because we’ve seen it all before.

The links dropped in Groups and in emails (spam) accomplishes nothing yet people say they are doing business online, then later complain that they never made any money.

Or have you received a hello from a stranger on FB in your ‘Other’ Inbox saying ‘Hey…look at my blah…blah…blah!  Click on the associated link….

Why Is It Wrong?

Very few people are introducing themselves and trying to develop relationships among the millions of people on social media, be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Very few people understand that first you have to build a relationship with the people you are trying to influence.

What they don’t understand is that they have a better chance of gaining a customer or a relationship if you just reach out and talk to a person.

Find out what they need and if you can supply it, be it information or a product or a service, then you will make progress in that journey toward making money online.

No it’s not easy, but the strategy does work.  If you know how to do it.  You can reach out to me by signing up on the right if you have questions on how to be more effective with social media.

So personally, I’m sick of social media. But of course we have to use it regardless as the medium and, if used correctly, social media is extremely powerful and effectively.

Well then…how do we find people in social media who are interesting in the same things we are?

How Do You Ask?  By Branding Yourself.

ID-100281532Here’s what you can do to start building relationships that will lead to loyalty among the people you know.

  1. Build relationships instead of dropping links in every random group or in a email or in someone’s inbox.
  2. When you’re on Facebook, find like groups of interest and start ‘Liking’ comments that interest you.  Comment here or there on topics of interest.  Let people get to know you.
  3. Get to know people and what they are about.  Who has a family?  Do you have anything in common with them?  Develop communication with them via their Wall, the FB stream, Twitter stream or through other social media.
  4. Build a blog and begin to brand yourself and who you are and what you do.
  5. Visit other bloggers and leave comments about their posts.  It helps that others get to know who you are and it brings traffic to your website which is an extra goodie.
  6. Build a  following.  Following and building relationships with others will help you find friends, develop relationships and develop trust.
  7. Don’t Spam.  Don’t send email with links  to random emails on people you don’t know on social media.
  8. Provide valuable information in some way to fellow group members if you are on FB groups.
  9. Learn how to build an effective list to get people who will opt into your mailing list of their own accord.
  10. Brand Yourself?  Who are you?  Show you are not some random person on the Internet trying to sell me something!

Relationship building will help you build your brand, but first make sure your brand is clearly defined and you have communicated this to people in the right way.

All these things need to be learned and it takes time but it is worth it to effectively build a following and develop relationships with people.

That way, social media will be an effective tool for your use in your business.

Me…I was tired of social media  until I learned how to do it the right way!

What about you?  Are you tired of social media? Are you building your brand and if so how?   Very interested in hearing your thoughts?
Cheers and Happy Networking!

This is an excellent article and it sure did locate me.

My weakness or at least one of them is marketing or branding myself. I am on the social media, but probably I can go up a notch.

    Relationship is the key!

I have realized even as a newbie, that it’s not that simple, but yet possible.

Thank you again and take care of YOU.

I think everyone branding themselves is hard work and it takes time. And to help, I think we all feel the need to bring it up a notch. I know I certainly do.

    Hi Barbara,

You have put together an excellent article. I see too many network marketers that are spamming their way all over the internet. And when I do I just want to gather them all up and ask What the heck are you doing???

It is evident that there needs to be a wake up call to these folks. Maybe they were taught to link drop, or maybe they are just copying what others are doing…I honestly don’t know!

You have given 10 solid reasons of how to have a social presence in an ethical manner. Someone has to step up to the plate and do something about this and this is a great start. This post can surely be an eye opener for those who are link dropping.

This is one thing I must share! Now get back to work and I’m looking forward for more information on this issue!

    -Blessings,

      Hi Donna,

For some reason I missed responding to the comments on this posts. Yep, I’m so tired of link droppers on Facebook. Drives you crazy. I’m hoping some of them see the reasons to not do it this way. Problem is there are so many out there, it’s hard to reach everyone and give them the real deal on how to make this thing work. And it’s not just network marketers either. It’s everyone who’s trying to market and just don’t know how.

Anyway, getting back to work now. Hopefully, some have read this article. 🙂
      Take care,
      Barbara

    Barbara,

I really appreciate this. I feel like a lot of bloggers (myself included) intend to be great networkers but it’s not eas to know how to do that on social media.

What I loved about this piece were your simple, actionable tips that could clearly be really effective. Great work! I’ll make sure to share it.

Btw, I found this through Donna Merrill on Facebook, in case you were wondering. She’s the best! 🙂

      Hi Brittany,

Thanks for your visit to my website. I appreciate you coming and reading my blog. 🙂
So glad you found information that was helpful to you. Yes I find social media with all the sites, just cumbersome sometimes, but once we know how to do it right, it can be dead-on for your business. 🙂

Hope you come back for a visit. And yes, Donna is the bomb! We’ve been in a mastermind group for over a 18 months now, may be closer to 2 years! Boy, time goes by fast. lol.

Tell her hi when you talk to her next. I’ve got some coaching with her next week.
Take care for now and again, thank you for visiting.
      Have a blessed week,

    Hey Barbara,

Doing anything online can be very frustrating when everywhere you turn you are being hit in the face by people who are doing this entirely wrong. That’s why there are just so many new people online today that don’t have a clue and they wonder why they aren’t having any success at all.

That’s what everyone seems to forget that social media is about being social. Link dropping is something people will probably continue to do but it’s the connecting with others and networking that will get you the farthests.

You have definitely given some great tips on exactly what people should be doing in order to start seeing results instead of the opposite. Now the one thing I hear all the time is that it’s so time consuming. It is but isn’t everything? This though is the one thing that will work where everything else won’t.

Great advice here Barbara, way to go.

Hope you have a great rest of your week my dear.

      Hi Adrienne,

Thanks so much. Yes, that link dropping thing drives me crazy! And people who don’t know me trying their best to impress me and tell me how I should be doing business. It’s kinda comical when you think about it, but frustrating too.

I’ve learned from you and others that building relationships is the way to go and I’m hearing it more and more and more.

Hopefully, someone will get some valuable information from us and try doing social media for business the right way!

Thanks for your help this week.
      Have a good one.

    Hi Barbara,

I still love Social Media – well Facebook especially. Sure there are people spamming and people hitting on us (I love your smile – bla) but I can shut it out.

I love some of the connections I have made and value the platforms that allow us to connect.

I think as Adrienne said there are many new people who do not know what they are doing.

Your tips and advice is great. I also get as you have a more than full time job I am sure it is very difficult.

    Have a good week,

      Hi Sue,

Thanks for visiting. I do love interacting with people on social media sites, but not the so many entrepreneurs who do not know about building relationships. When they learn to do business right on social media, then everyone’s life becomes so much better. 🙂

I do love the connections we make. I can talk to my friends in Germany, in Australia (you) and in PNG. It’s a great outlet for connections, but entrepreneurs have to do it the right way, otherwise, it will drive others away.

Glad you think the tips are helpful. You have a great week as well.
      God bless,
      Barbara

Hi Barbara, at times I am but I’ve been taking part if not all of weekends off and it’s great to disconnect. It helps to get back into it once Mondays roll around again. The one area I haven’t gotten much into is groups , especially on FB, I’m on a few but don’t spend much time with them. There are just so many things out there today! I noticed several of my followers on Twitter loved this post Barbara, hope to catch up with you soon.

      Hi Lisa,

I know how you feel about groups. I have a few but it is hard to maintain or interact in too many. Then it becomes ineffective. I’d rather be in 2 or 3 and be very effective as opposed to multiple ones and not be effective.

In the meantime, taking time off on week-ends is a great idea. Also makes us more effective as we go along.

Thanks for responding and sorry for getting back so late.
      Take care,
